President of Ukraine Petro Poroshenko assigned the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine to ensure support for the development of the Chornobyl Radioecological Biosphere Reserve.
This was stated in the Decree of the President of Ukraine dated July 5, 2018 No.196/2018 “On additional measures to revive the areas subjected to radioactive contamination as a result of the Chornobyl disaster, on social protection of the affected people, safe radioactive waste management”.
The Decree was issued with the aim to “ensure radiation protection and safety in the areas subjected to radioactive contamination as a result of the Chornobyl disaster, for rehabilitation and revival of these areas, support of environment-oriented, scientific and research activities in the exclusion zone and the zone of absolute (mandatory) resettlement, improvement of social protection of citizens affected by the Chornobyl disaster”.
In particular, the President of Ukraine assigns the government of Ukraine:
“To contribute to the development of Chornobyl Radioecological Biosphere Reserve as a unique wildlife sanctuary, in particular, to ensure the following:
Before the end of 2018, carry out radioecological monitoring of the areas subjected to radioactive contamination due to the Chornobyl disaster, where the Chornobyl Radioecological Biosphere Reserve was established, with the objective to evaluate and determine prospects for their further development;
Finalize efforts on the establishment of borders and complete documentation on the land administration, register the right of land permanent use within the Chornobyl Radioecological Biosphere Reserve;
Study the issue of improving management and operation of the Chornobyl Radioecological Biosphere Reserve, with due regard for the specific conditions and regulation of its protected areas and take appropriate measures basing on the results;
In accordance with the established procedure, address the issue of a visit center establishment within the Chornobyl Radioecological Biosphere Reserve, provide premises in Kyiv to accommodate certain units of special administration of the Biosphere Reserve in order to establish a research and information platform;
Observe security arrangements in the area and at the facilities of the Chornobyl Radioecological Biosphere Reserve, including provision of needed vehicles and water transport, special communications equipment to the staff of the state security service of the Chornobyl Radioecological Biosphere Reserve”.
