The Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (ChEZ) is located within the physical and geographical area of the Kiev Polissia of the Polissia lowlands of the East European Plain.

The ChEZ relief is characterized by the general decline in the eastern direction, by the presence of moraine and outwash, moraine and hilly and outwash plains and by the prevailing heights of 115-140 m above the sea level with the maximum elevation of 160 m in the northwestern and central parts.

Current status of the ChEZ

The area of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone and the Zone of Unconditional (Obligatory) Resettlement (the EZ and ZU(О)R) is 2600 km2.

The EZ and ZU(O)R is a territory with strictly restricted access and movement, which is controlled by a block of special laws and regulations. The status of the EZ and ZU(O)R is determined by the Ukrainian legislation, in particular, by the Law of Ukraine ‘On the Legal Regime of the Territory that was Subjected to the Radioactive Contaminated as a Result of the Chornobyl Accident’.
