The objective of the UNEP-GEF project is to assist Ukraine in establishment of the system of the environmental protection activities within and around the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone for conservation of the valuable natural complexes of Polissya, which cannot be used in the traditional economic areas, as well as in support of the natural processes of the carbon cycle.
An important task of the project is assistance in organization of the work of the Chornobyl Radiation and Ecological Biosphere Reserve, in particular the development of programs and areas of the environmental protection activities, obtaining scientific information on the real value of the certain areas of the reserve, the number and distribution of rare species of plants and animals, problems and perspectives for their conservation, possible risks, etc. Such information will form the basis for development of the plan for functional zoning of the reserve and justifying its program of activities.
Within the project it is supposes to create on the basis of the Reserve a Scientific and Research Environmental Protection Center, which should unite the scientific and monitoring organizations of the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (ChEZ) and Ukraine. The Center will facilitate the formation of the information base and coordination of works in the ChEZ, optimization of studies conducted at its territory and usage of the results received for solving the existing problems of the Exclusion Zone, and also for conservation and sustainable development of the ChEZ forest and wetlands and its biodiversity.
The project concerns environmental protection activities at the local, national and international levels, and it will promote the development and expansion of the network of the protected areas in and around the ChEZ, as well as extending the use of the ChEZ to the benefit of all stakeholders.
